Hobbies For New Mommies: 10 Fun Ways To Awaken Your Inner Child

0 comment 233 views

You just gave birth to a whole human, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be playful and free. Becoming a mummy doesn’t mean you have to suppress your inner baby.

Your life doesn’t have to be all about nap schedules, pumping milk, changing diapers and quarreling with your husband on who does what.

You were a whole person before that beautiful baby. You had a whole life; a fun and colorful one for that matter. You have to awaken that girl again. And this blog post is here to help you to do just that. You might just find your favorite hobbies.

First Things First

Can you get rid of that thought of being stuck and tied down? That’s because you’re really not. Several moms around the world have bounced back after their first, second or tenth baby.

You might think, “Good for them. They must have had this and that or gotten this or that opportunity which made it easier for them. I don’t have that luxury.”

We’re glad to let you know that you’re wrong and are probably just scared of failing, or succeeding and becoming that super mom that you’ve always imagined – juggling a number of things, whilst your baby blossoms healthily. It is not beyond you and it’s really not that deep.

On the other hand, you don’t need to do a lot of things at once. Don’t sign up for online baking lessons, buy a guitar and start being a content creator, all because you want to prove to yourself or to everyone else that you are a go-getter of some sort.

You’ll only burn yourself out and end up not doing any of those anyway. In the same vein, you do not necessarily need to become an expert in any activity you choose to do. You’re showing up to have fun and to feel like yourself again.

You’re not asking for too much from yourself. It is just what you need to power through the season you find yourself in.

Now that we’ve got you all psyched up, let’s dive into the most fun hobbies you can start today from wherever you are in your journey.

To start with, we’ll classify them into 3 different categories to help you narrow down your choices.

The Creative And Expressive Mommy

Were you that child that always loved artistic and creative expressions? This is the time to bring her back to the fore. Tap into your world of imagination and creative bliss with these hobbies.

1. Painting, Doodling And Drawing

If your creative hairs are standing at the sight of this, then this is meant for you.

The freedom and peace that comes with drawing freely or with artistic precision can only be understood by those who have experienced it.

If you’re one of those, take this as your cue to hold a brush or pencil again. It really doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Grab some charcoal or old markers and some papers and release yourself on them, you creative mommy genius.

Again, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Relax and have fun. This will apply to all other hobbies listed subsequently, so keep it somewhere at the back of your mind.

2. Journaling And Creative Writing

Are your thoughts running wild from all the responsibilities you have? Do you love to vent and rant? Your husband has probably become the object of your random rants. Leave the poor man alone and get a journal.

Now, unleash on that paper how great you felt when your baby ate all that food you gave them after making you lose hours of sleep.

If your brain is running wilder and faster than your hands, and the pen feels too slow, get a digital diary. A smart phone. The same one you’re scrolling through Instagram with. Write them all down.

Creative writing is another beautiful hobby you can pick up. Write fictional stories. Write about wildlife. Write for new moms like you (you can publish them when you have figured it all out and cracked the baby code).

3. DIY Crafts

If you are one of those rare creatures whose hands are blessed and can create or recreate stuff, this is all the motivation you need to start doing those. Start with your baby’s stuff to decorative items for your home or your own wardrobe.

Put those blessed hands to good use.

Who knows? This could become a side hustle that could fetch you some good money. However, we’re not here to discuss that. You can explore that option if you’re considering side hustles. For now, we’re here to relax and feel rejuvenated.

Some satisfying DIY crafts include crocheting, origami, weaving, Macrame, among many others. There’s something so satisfying about starting something from scratch, especially when you rediscover yourself in the process.

The Active And Playful Mommy

Get ready to shake off all that grown up stress with these simple activities. The fun part is, you’ll find yourself laughing more and feeling more alive and hearty. You will not achieve that by sitting around or sulking about your new season.

That said, let’s get into it!

4. Dancing Around The House

Have your own version of “Step Up’ right there in our house. Practice those dance challenges you watch on TikTok (and post them if you feel confident).

Put the playlist on blast and dance the house down! (Just not when the baby is sleeping). Let your baby watch you dance or dance with them. They’ll enjoy the show too.

5. Swimming

Don’t have a pool at home? Step out and find one at a venue you can trust. Go to the beach alone. Let the water soak away the stress. It will be one of the most therapeutic things you do for yourself.

Your body, soul and mind need it. And it’s okay if swimming isn’t your thing. You have nine other hobby options to choose from.

6. Skipping/Jump rope

Kill two (or three) birds with one stone through skipping. Those birds are called improved heart health, mental clarity and good coordination and you’ll have fun while doing it.

All you need is a jump rope and some free space (and make sure there are no baby toys in the way).

The Mommy That Needs A Quiet Escape

Perhaps, you’re not up for all the hobbies that require a lot of physical activity or you’re looking to add new hobbies to your list. Here are four relaxing, brain stimulating and joy-giving hobbies to take up.

7. Gardening

Digging in the dirt, planting something and watching it grow can revive that childlike wonder. If it sounds like a lot of work, start with one plant, in one empty container.

Remind yourself to water it everyday by tying it into another daily task, such as feeding your baby, and observe as it grows together with your precious little one.

8. Playing board or card games

Scrabble, Monopoly, Chess, Solitaire, etc, are all great options. And fun fact is, they are all solo-friendly. To make it more fun, you can play with your husband, invite your friends over and play with them or with your baby(if you don’t mind the chaos).

9. Solving puzzles

This is either a long forgotten hobby or has been reserved  for the kids only. Well, let’s bring it back! Awaken your inner child by tackling a puzzle today. Relive those proud childhood moments and give your brain a workout while enjoying some quiet time.

10. Watching cartoons and animations

What better way to enter a child’s world than by watching some cartoons? The bright colours and exaggerated movements are just what you need to recharge.

You don’t have to watch the ones your baby is watching (unless you feel like it, since you’re probably always with them). Enjoy the vibrant colours and the imaginative storytelling. It’ll be a perfect escape for you.

Final Thoughts

You are doing an amazing job as a new mom and those babies will be forever grateful. However, they’ll also be incredibly thankful if you do not lose touch with your own fun, childlike side. Taking time out for yourself only makes you better for them. So go ahead and have fun. You’ve earned it.
